Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad is a 911-only Emergency Medical Services agency which operates in Bucks County, PA. In 2024 the squad responded to over 7,000 requests for assistance including regional responses from our Bariatric and Special Support Units. Penndel-Middletown currently deploys two Advanced Life Support ambulances to serve the community 24/7/365 from Stations 167 and 168. An additional two Advanced Life Support ambulances and a dedicated supervisor are placed in service during peak weekday operational periods to handle the modern demand for emergency medical services.
A volunteer core of 20 members spearheads the administrative aspects of the squad. Many of these members hold administrative offices on the Board of Directors and within the Relief Association. The Squad employs 19 full-time personnel, 11 part-time staff members, and 33 “as needed” paid employees. We recruit volunteers and hire employees on a continuous rolling basis.
Clinically the squad is lucky to have the involvement of Dr. Gerald Wydro, MD who started at Penndel-Middletown all the way back in 1986 as an EMT. Dr. Wydro works with a QA Coordinator, a Clinical Coordinator, and a peer-review committee to keep the squad up to his high standards for excellence. The squad participates in several pilot programs and currently carries an array of optional medications to better serve the public.
The Squad currently has a budget in the $3.6 million range with expenses only projected to rise. Major expenditures are payroll and benefits for staff, ambulances which cost in the range of $300,000 each, and specialty medical equipment such as powered stretcher/loading systems, cardiac monitors, and mechanical CPR devices. Some of this cost is recouped through billing insurance companies for services, but revenue falls short of covering expenses without fail.
The members of Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad look forward to serving the residents of Lower Bucks County in the decades to come. We are taking steps to invest in our personnel, stations, fleet, and community to best serve when YOU need it most.
